Question by rhi.rhi: 10-day water fast + Jillian Michaels “Master Your Metabolism” Diet..will I lose weight?
I’m 17yrs old. F. 5’5″. about 150lbs. Previously suffered from an eating disorder several months ago and have gained all the weight back during recovery and now am committing to becoming strong and healthy. I’m going to start with a 10day water/tea ONLY fast and I was wondering how much weight I would lose? and should i exercise during a fast? Then, after the 10days is up, I’m going to be following Jillian Michael’s “Master Your Metabolism” meal plans to eat the right foods for my body and get my hormones back on track and working properly, which, in turn, promotes healthy and “fast” weight loss because the body isn’t under any stressful conditions and being starved. So, just wondering, how much weight can I lose on a 10day water fast, and basically only eat fruit, veggies, little dairy, and whole grains (I’m vegetarian=no meat)??? After the fast I will start to exercise at LEAST 30min a day.
I NEED HELP/ADVICE!!!
Thanx!!!

Your body needs a reasonable amount of food *every day*.

10 days of water and tea (only) will really screw things up.

  1. Don’t listen to her, please. She’s an IDIOT. An absolute IDIOT.

A fast is a bad idea and exercising during a fast is even worse. The truth is you don’t need to lose weight. You need to lose fat. This means you need to keep (and work on) the muscle. If you fast, your body will go into “starvation mode” and eat the muscle before the fat (doesn’t make sense, I know). If you exercise while fasting, you will only speed this “eating” process up. So, yes, you WILL lose weight. Maybe a lot of weight. But it will be mostly muscle and when you’re done, you’ll still have body fat, which will make you look like a little dough ball. :P

My advice: Skip this fasting crap. There’s no reason for it. Join a few nutrition websites and learn how to eat healthy. You should also get some exercise advice, so look for that too. Honestly, I recommend you join a body building website. All you have to do is tell them you don’t want to get big and muscular and that you only want to be fit. They’ll know exactly what you should do and eat. They’re very, very good with this stuff.

Good luck. Please be smart and healthy about this. It makes me sad when nice people get eating disorders. :(

  2. whatever weight you loose from a fast, if you return to your normal eating habits your going to gain it all bad and it might be hard to get rid of. your going to be so burned out if your fasting and working out, i would recommend you to walk around the block if you were to exersize.

a cleanse is good to do once in a while, and get rid of toxins in your body.
i did a 2 day water detox and then started to eat normal meals and worked out, i think the detox was a good way to start off my diet.

best of luck to youuu, and dont stress yurself out :D u can do it!

  3. You should only fast for God. Talk to Him. Going 10 days only to lose weight is not good. Your body needs nutrition. You could crash if you try to exercise going without food for 10 days. After your stomach is out of food it can start eating at your muscles. Lets say you’re on a 2000 calorie a day diet to maintain the weight you’re at now. If you reduce your calorie intake to 1500 you would lose a pound a week. Don’t go without food for 10 days, it would do you more harm than good.Mark gocoltz1963@yahoo.com

  4. Dear Rhi. The other posters may have some good points, but I’m not sure that they are informed medical doctors. I have done a lot of research on the topic, and a few water fasts, and yes, I am a doctor. You should read Dr. Mark Fuhrman’s “Fasting and Eating for Health” and then, “Eat to Live”. You can find them cheap on amazon, or half.com. He is vegetarian, so it suits your long-term goals even more. Fasts of 5 to 30+ days duration are different than starvation, because your body goes into ketosis after about 48 hours after food is withheld where it derives energy from ketones instead of glucose. You will use up some muscle stores initially, but they will drop to about 0.2 kg per day (negligible) when your body enters “protein sparing” mode where you begin to work from your fat stores and your body basically “digests” adipose tissue and other junk (hence the theory of detoxification and fasting). If you were to continue fasting beyond these extra reserves (and Americans have PLENTY…) you would begin to lost muscle mass and become unhealthy. A 10-30 day fast is fine, and having suffered from eating disorders myself, it can do wonders in “resetting” your mindset and giving you a fresh start, especially if you have been eating poorly or binge eating. You will lose about 1-2 lbs initially during the first week, and then weight drops to about 1/2 lb from that point on. Some will be initially water loss, so don’t get too excited at first. It will be hard to exercise on no food-just do some walking or yoga or pilates. I am a marathon runner, and I have been too fatigued to run, but walking works well. Your metabolism will be SLOW after the fast, which is kind of good in a way, because it forces you to eat healthy and stay on track. Good luck!
