light. Today’s is titled do you believe this stuff about cortisol and “belly fat?”? .
Question by myportraitdrawing: do you believe this stuff about cortisol and “belly fat?”?
Is your stress level really going to significantly increase your belly fat? My theory is a lot of people eat more to deal with stress, and the hormone cortisol is not going to directly cause you to put on a lot of extra pounds. It sounds like another gimmick cooked up by greedy people to exploit the growing and desperate obese population.

Cortisol does depress the metabolism making it easier to gain weight- But ultimately it is your lifestyle in total (including how you deal with stress!) that determines what your weight and health are like.

My therapist told me that cortisol does play a role in weight gain from emotional eating. She told me that the body produces cortisol in response to stress and depression, and cortisol increases food cravings – it is like the body says, “look, you are depressed and you might decide to crawl in bed and hibernate for a week, so before you do, you have to load up on fuel to get you through the hibernation.” She also told me that she had a huge increase in clients who had unexplained rage reactions, and what they had in common was that they had been taking those diet supplements that were supposed to block the cortisol. So her opinion of it was that, yeah, cortisol will cause weight gain, but that messing with the body’s production or metabolism of it is more dangerous than the weight gain.
